10th Annual Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards
The world is sometimes noted for being a sad and depressing place. People are not often kind enough to strangers, let alone those they know well. With so much anger and sadness, many are left wondering if there is any room for kindness or happiness anymore.
Apparently there is and it is made evidently clear with the annual Rick Weiss Humanitarian Award Gala. For ten years, like minded people have gathered together to host an event that places above all, the importance of doing something wonderful for others, and for making the world a better place to live in. This takes not only strength and determination against all odds, but also requires a lot of heart and love for your fellow man.
This historic event found it’s humble beginnings through the achievements and accomplishments of one man that refused to accept the world at face value. Rick Weiss placed a higher value on humanity and made it obvious that he considered all people great or small, important regardless of their station in life. His life partner, Earl Greenburg, stood next to him as they fought for a better life for low-income and HIV/AIDS people that were homeless and trying to simply make a life for themselves.
An organization, in 1993, gave wings to Project New Hope, giving them the help to fly above the reproach of humanity. They designed living accommodations to hold 25 families, in the hope of giving them a more positive outlook on life and to give them a new way of living. Earl Greenburg pledged his full support in assisting to find the necessary funds to cover portions of the project that would not be covered by government grants or other funds.
Because of his show of compassion and dedication and after losing his life partner, Rick Weiss, to AIDS, Project New Hope honored them both by naming the building after Rick as a gesture of thanksgiving for his work with the elderly and for animal rights. As a result, a new award, the Rick Weiss Humanitarian Award, was chosen to be given to whatever person, people, or company was being recognized for their selflessness and actions that sought to better the world around them. Since that first gala ten years ago, there have been a large number of people honored for their dedication and support.
The gala itself is a black tie event, promising to be both uplifting and encouraging. Those in attendance have in some way given back to their communities as well as tried to better the world. Through these selfless acts and kindness shown, many people have been helped and many lives have been changed. Giving back to the community around you is only the beginning to trying to heal the world. With so much pain and anguish abounding it sometimes seems as if the battle is never ending, but thanks to those that think differently and refuse to settle for any less than equality and compassion for everyone, we find events like the Rick Weiss Humanitarian Gala to be not only welcome, but also necessary for the betterment of everyone around the world.
