Thunder & Lightning Pow Wow

Enjoy the wonderful festivities of the annual Annual Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow show being held during September 26th, 27th and 28th . The show offers a great opportunity to travel through the path of our ancestors.

This mega show presents more than 1,200 dancers competing to win the mega prizes worth more than $260,000. This is a grand occasion which shares the verdant cultural heritage of different communities in this great’country.’ Pow Wows, originally planned for spring, welcome the new beginnings of life, and are grandeur festivities showcasing the culture and heritage of Native Americans. It is a great occasion for the people to join together, sing, dance and’share’cultures. This is considered as the best time to renew the friendships, recollect relations and also to make new friends.’

Today, Pow Wows are an integral part of the Native Americans lives. The Pow Wow celebration brings together many native tribes together in a festive and social atmosphere. ‘There is a lot of’enthusiasm and the whole atmosphere becomes vibrant during the festival period.

This is a grand occasion of dance and music.’There’will be areas of the PowWows thriving with illuminations, joy and activities. The spectators are allowed entry at free of cost. The Grand Entry is an attractive event in the beginning of every session of Pow Wow. It consists of a parade of well dressed people, dressed in colors accompanied with songs and dances. This is a nice occasion to the participants to score more points. All competing people will be participating in the Grand entries.

The cultural heritage and the marvel of the dance compositions and music are displayed in the Pow Wow. The tribal songs and dances have been inherited through many generations.’Competitions are held for various age groups, kids, women and men. This will be an eye catching event for the people to enjoy and experience the grandeur traditional artistic talents in the country. Since 1992, the Palm Springs Walk of Stars has been honoring prominent personalities in show business and the entertainment industry as well as the literary field by placing Golden Palm Stars embedded on the sidewalks located at Palm Canyon Drive, Tahquitz Canyon Way and Museum Drive. The Stars are a historical landmark of the Greater Palm Springs Area.

Meritorious Stars are also awarded to humanitarians and pioneer/civic persons within our desert community, military persons who have received the Congressional Medal Award, sports figures and to The Palm Springs International Film Festival Annual Special Honoree. The Board of Directors also considers certain criteria in choosing honorees.

The event is a great way to promote and benefit our Greater Palm Springs area.

312TH GOLD PALM STAR UNVEILING

The 312th Golden Palm Star unveiling honoring Miriam and Earl Hoover will be held this year at 101 Museum Drive, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2008. The Hoovers, part-time residents of Palm Springs for over 50 years, contributed to the creation and funding of numerous charitable organizations throughout the desert community. Mr. Hoover, who past away in 1985, managed the Hoover Company and was on the Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum. The event is open to the public and media and will be hosted by Bob Alexander, the President of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

STAR ADOPTION DONATIONS- TAX DEDUCTIBLE

If you are interested in adopting a Golden Palm Star, the cost is $275.00 and is tax deductible. The funds are used to maintain and clean the Star for one year with an additional one year right of first refusal renewal. As part of your donation, you will also receive one free admission to the annual “Celebration of Stars” party. The Palm Springs Walk of Stars is a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Foundation.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, and here at the McCallum Theatre you find this statement true as no other place on earth. From the beautiful stone decor outside with lovely pillars and expertly placed lighting to the breathtaking interior, this is a theatre house like no other and ever since opening their doors twenty years ago, January 2, 1988, these walls have seen thousands of different people come and go. Viewers from different generations, different backgrounds, all drawn to one place out of a love of the arts and the beauty of dance, acting, or singing.

Along with the vastly teeming crowds that have graced this amazing establishment have been notorious actors,singers, and famous members of society and government. Creator of Howdy Doody -Velma Wayne Dawson, in memory

A true legend, and a memorable part of American history, puppeteer and puppet maker, Velma Wayne Dawson of Palm Desert, passed away on September 26, 2007. She was known for her love of puppets, that she was fascinated by at an early age after viewing the much praised team of Walton and O’Rourke. At this point, Velma was completely seduced by the magical quality of the puppets, and felt overwhelmed by a need to purchase some puppets, but found very few anywhere. Upon asking, she found that puppets were not common, and she made the decision to attempt to make puppets on her own, following the advice of the only book she was able to find, by Tony Sarg, about making puppets.

As a result of her love for puppets, she attended art school and learned to sculpt and paint. Her first creation was based off of the Tony Sarg book, and Velma always claimed it was a “pathetic” puppet. Some people feel her true schooling came following the viewing of a puppet show in downtown Los Angeles. She asked the Barlow’s, the husband and wife puppeteer team, if they sold their puppets, and received a resounding, “No, but we’ll teach you.”

This moment lead fairly quickly to the later stages in Velma’s life, as her skill for making puppets grew, and her reputation as an excellent puppeteer became widely known in the Hollywood movie circles. Following a crisis and losing their feature star, NBC contacted Velma, requesting a rush job on a puppet. (more…)
