Palm Springs, CA is truly becoming a city that never rests. Although this might seem contradictory to the general atmosphere in the scenic town, it has begun to define the majority of activities there. With something going on nearly every week, it comes as no surprise to announce another awe inspiring occasion.
This annual event has gained notoriety for the exciting mosaic of a multitude of architectural and design programs and events that are taking place in Palm Springs. This collaboration between some of the hierarchical seats of power in Palm Springs, such as the Palm Springs Historical Society, Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, the Modernism Show, and the Palm Springs Art Museum is one sight you simply must see.
To attend this annual show is something to remember from the amazing sights to the splendor and grandeur of the scenic surroundings. With the focus set on architect and design, attendees are made privy to an awe inspiring collection of the old designs in conjunction with the new, bringing the past and the present into comparison to help re-invent Palm Springs and the beautiful history, both cultural and architectural.
Never a town to be taken lightly, the schedule for Modernism Week in Palm Springs holds various functions and parties. From the start, this year the celebration begins with a grand party set for Valentine’s Day, and what a way to blend old and new than with a sweetheart party with The GANDS Live beginning at 7 PM. Friday, the 15th begins the show with a preview reception in the evening, preceded by a once in a lifetime ceremony honoring architect Donald Wexler as a Walk of Fame Star is dedicated in his name in the early afternoon.
The weekend holds a variety of enjoyable events beginning with the modernism show on Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM where you can buy, exclusively, some of the most fabulous vintage clothing, jewelry and an assortment of other amazing finds. No one is really found anywhere else but in Palm Springs during the month of February. The sun is shining, and the weather promises nothing but delights. The modernism show draws thousands of people from all over the nation to spend a day in the “modernist period” in Palm Springs. Later that evening you get a chance to fully immerse yourself in the modernist way of life once more by attending the popular sixth annual Palm Springs Committee’s Annual Benefit party. Here only black and white clothing need apply and you can step into the modern world of glass and steel as you dance the night away at the PSMODCOM Party 2008.
The week follows with a re-cap of the modernism show and bus rides for viewing the local architecture, retro film screening and lectures by notorious architects, foreign and local. Presentations by ADC Film, a martini party and classic car show promise to draw in additional attendees. All this and much more is an alluring ten day celebration of Modernism Week in Palm Springs where you and everyone else can get a feel for Palm Springs — the past and present.
